Identification
17-19 cm
- Grey upperparts, with dark streaks
- White underparts
- Wings chestnut:
- black outer flight feathers
- white inner flight feathers
Adult male: chestnut crown Female similar, but lacks the chestnut head
Distribution
Arid steppes of central Eurasia.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Formerly placed in the genus Melanocorypha.
Habitat
Dry, open steppe and plains.
Behaviour
Breeding
It nests on the ground, laying 3-8 eggs.
Diet
The diet includes seeds and insects.
