Identification
15 cm. Black back, chest white, eyestripe black, crown grey-white with blackish streaks (Peru and Bolivia), or back black with white centre, chest and belly white, lower belly black, eyestripe black, crown grey with darker streaks, eyestripe black (Venezuela to Ecuador).
Distribution
Peru, Bolivia, Venezuela,Colombia and Ecuador.

Fast flowing mountain streams.
Behaviour
The diet includes aquatic invertebrates.
It builds a spherical nest with a circular entrance hole at the side, of mosses with an inner cup of dry leaves, strips of bark, placed in crevices in rock-faces above flowing water. 2 eggs are laid.
