Identification

16·5–17 cm (6.5-6¾ in)

  • Tawny crown
  • Rufous hindcrown
  • Greyish upperparts
  • Darker wings
  • Black tail
  • Long narrow white supercilium

Distribution

Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Falkland Islands, Peru, and South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, vagrant to Colombia1. Breeds in the southern half of this range, migrates north during Austral winter.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[2].

Habitat

High altitude grassland, pastures and rough stony hillsides. Occasionally near lakes and in marshy areas.

Behaviour

Diet

They mainly hunt for insects on the ground, runs and hops; suddenly standing still and erect.
