Identification

Similar Species

Differ from Moustached Wren in having grey underparts versus tawny in Moustached Wren, and even more significantly in voice.

Distribution

Along the Andes of Venezuela, Colombia, and Ecuador.

Taxonomy

Eight subspecies are recognized1.

This species was for a while placed as one part of Moustached Wren but is now again seen as a full species.

Was formerly placed in genus Thryothorus with all other species of the genus Pheugopedius.

Habitat

Mostly at mid elevation, more rarely in lowland: forest edges, clearings, second growth, almost always in dense undergrowth such as heliconia.

Behaviour

Difficult to see but easy to hear.

Voice is rich gurgling sound, relatively slow.
