Identification
8-9cm (3-3½ in). A tiny woodpecker.
- Black top of head with white feather tips, male with broad red feather tips on crown forming a solid red patch
- White lores speckled black
- Dark brown rest of plumage
- Underparts with rows of white-tipped black feathers
Juveniles are more barred below
Distribution
South America: found in Amazonian Brazil (lower Rio Madeira to extreme western Pará).
A little-known restricted-range species.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Hybridization with White-barred Piculet recorded.
Habitat
Moist lowland forests, varzea with dense undergrowth.
Behaviour
No information about diet.
Breeding
Breeding season possibly from June to December. No other information.
Movements
Presumably a resident species.
