Tuamotu Sandpiper - BirdForum Opus

Prosobonia parvirostris

Identification

15.5-16.5 cm. Mottled brown, barred underparts. Brown iris, black bill, yellow to olive grey legs and feet. Sexes similiar.

Pale birds are medium brown above and white below, light barring or spotting on the breast and whitish streaking on the head, white supercilium and chin, brown rectrices with white tips and white triangular markings on the outer webs.

Dark phase birds, darker brown and white with light buff or tawny white, brown flanks, brown barred underparts.

Distribution

The Tuamotu Islands in French Polynesia. Only 1200 individuals are estimated in the population.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species.
Formerly considered conspecific with the extinct Kiritimati Sandpiper.

Habitat

Beaches of coral rubble and sand, shrubland and interior of forests.

Behaviour

The diet includes insects and other invertebrates and more surprising also nectar, seeds, and other plant material. Feeding takes place in scrubs and trees as well as from the ground.
