Eastern Africa: South Sudan, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Tanzania and Zambia.

Subspecies
There are 4 subspecies[1]:
- M. a. aquatica:
- Southwestern Mauritania south to Gambia, east Nigeria, northern Cameroon, southern Chad, northern Central African Republic, western South Sudan, and northern Democratic Republic of the Congo
- M. a. infulata:
- Central and eastern South Sudan, northeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Rwanda, western Burundi, western Kenya, northwestern Tanzania, and northeastern Zambia
- M. a. lualabae:
- Southeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (swamps along Lualaba River)
- M. a. grimwoodi:
- Southern Zambia (Kabwe district, Suye Lake and Lukanga Swamp)
Habitat
Near water especially papyrus swamps and trees overhanging rivers.
