Identification

13–15 cm (5-6 in)

  • Narrow whitish supercilium
  • Greyish-brown crown and upperparts
  • Blackish-grey wings with whitish wingbars

Distribution

Central and South America.
Central America: found in Costa Rica, Panama, Trinidad, Netherlands Antilles, Aruba
South America: Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana and Brazil

Subspecies

There are 6 subspecies[1]:

  • S. a. arenarum:
  • S. a. atrirostris:
  • Pearl Islands (off southern Panama) and northern Colombia
  • S. a. glaber:
  • S. a. pallens:
  • Curaçao
  • S. a. tortugensis:
  • Isla La Tortuga (off northern Venezuela)
  • S. a. orinocensis:
  • Extreme eastern Colombia, Orinoco Valley of southern Venezuela, adjacent Brazil

Habitat

Mangroves and nearby vegetation, and scrubby second growth.

Behaviour

Diet

Their main diet consists of arthropods, such as ants, caterpillars and small beetles. They also eat some small berries.

Breeding

They construct a cup nest, which is placed in the fork of a small tree about 2-6m above ground.
