Identification
A small (13-14cm) ground Babbler1:
- Generally dark brown with white throat and long whitish stripes below
- White supercilium (more prominent in some subspecies)
- Black submoustachial stripe
- Short tail
- Colour of crown varies in subspecies, from rufescent brown to blackish-brown
Sexes similar, juveniles not described.
Distribution
Endemic to the Philippines.1
Uncommon restricted-range species, but not considered threatened. A good site for this species is the Rajah Sikatuna National Park on Bohol.1
Taxonomy
Four subspecies recognized1, 2:
- P. m. mindanensis on Mindanao
- P. m. basilanica on Basilan, a small island off Mindanao
- P. m. fortichi on Bohol
- P. m. minuta on Samar and Leyte
Habitat
Moist primary lowland forests and montanes, usually below 1000m, on Mt Kitanglad up to 1400m.1
Behaviour
Probably feeding on invertebrates.
Seen in pairs, small groups of up to four birds or singly. Usually seen on ground where it forages, turning leaves around.
Breeding season from January to August. Reported nest a semi-domed cup made of dead leaves and placed 0.3m above ground in a small spiny palm. This nest contained 1 egg.
