Hirundo fluvicola

Identification

11–12 cm (4¼-4¾ in)

  • Chestnut forehead, crown and nape, with faint dark streaks
  • In front, streaks are limited to chin, throat and breast
  • Shallow fork to broad tail
  • Glossy blue back with whitish streaks
  • Off white front ( belly, vent and under-tail coverts )
  • Pale brown rump

Asia: found from north-eastern Afghanistan to northern Pakistan and peninsula India.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1], which was previously included in genus Hirundo.

Habitat

Cultivated and open country near water, reservoirs, wilderness close to wetlands; towns and villages.

Behaviour

Action

Flight rather weak and fluttery.

Diet

Their diet consists almost entirely of flies. They hawk in flocks, sometimes with other hirundines.
