Identification
10 cm
Mainly dark brown with light streaking on head and yellowish rump.
Distribution
Taxonomy
Formerly placed in genus Lonchura. Leucosticta from the lowlands of southern New Guinea has recently been accepted as a full species, White-spotted Mannikin.
Subspecies
Four subspecies are recognized[1].
- M: t. tristissima - North West New Guinea (Vogelkop Mountains)
- M: t. hypomelaena - western New Guinea (Weyland and Charles Louis Mountains)
- M: t. calaminoros - New Guinea (western lowlands, lowlands of northern New Guinea east of the Bird's Neck east to the northern slope of the Southeastern Peninsula, and southern slope of the Southeastern Peninsula east of Port Moresby)
- M: t. bigilalei - southeastern New Guinea (southern slope of the southeastern Peninsula; distribution incompletely known, but reported from Lakekamu basin southeast to Rigo)
Habitat
Streams, forest clearings and abandoned gardens.
Behaviour
Diet
The diet mostly consists of insects, berries and seeds.
Breeding
They construct a globular grass nest with A side entrance, often suspended from rattans, in A forest or at forest edgeS.
