Identification
18–21 cm (7-8¼ in)
Male
- Black forehead and fore-crown
- Red hind-crown, nape and moustache
The female has a black moustache.
A very variable species regarding darkness and shape of dark markings.
Distribution
Central and South America
Eastern Panama, Colombia, Venezuela, The Guianas, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and Brazil.
Taxonomy
Some authorities place this species in genus Chrysoptilus.

Habitat
Rainforests, deciduous and gallery forests, second growth, coffee plantations, and mangroves, often near water.
Behaviour
The live and forage in family groups.
Diet
Feeds on branches and stems, and sometimes on the ground. Their main diet consists of ants and their larvae.
