- Zimmerius improbus
Identification
12 cm
- Olive upperside.
- Most of wing dusky, primaries blackish. Greater coverts, secondaries and outer primaries edged in bright yellow producing a pattern of one yellowish and one black wedge on the flight feathers and no wing bars.
- head with brownish grey crown and auriculars, black eye-line, yellowish-white throat, supercilium and semi-arch under the eye.
- Underside pale with indistinct light grey streaking.
Distribution
Northern Colombia and northwestern Venezuela
Taxonomy
This is one of the daughter species from the former Paltry Tyrannulet
Two subspecies are recognized[1].
- Z. i. tamae
- northern Colombia and northwestern Venezuela, in the Santa Marta Mountains, the Sierra de Perijá , and the Tamá massif; the population in the Santa Martas and the Perijá may be an undescribed subspecies, distinct from "true" tamae of the Tamá region in Norte de Santander, Colombia and immediately adjacent Táchira, Venezuela
- Z. i. improbus
- Andes of northwestern Venezuela (eastern Táchira to Trujillo)
Habitat
Mid elevation forests, edges, and more open areas with some trees.
Behaviour
Insects and fruit but details are lacking. Food is mainly obtained in mid to upper canopy
Vocalisation
2-5 whistles that are slightly descending.
