Identification
12–13 cm (4¾-5 in)
- Green overall plumage
- Yellowish-green face and throat
- Grey breast
- Cobalt blue rump and secondaries
- Pink beak and legs
- Greyish-brown iris
Orbital ring
- male: cobalt blue orbital ring, female: emerald green
Females: rump and lower back are emerald green. Their undersides are also a bit brighter green than those of males.
Distribution
[[South America: found in Panama, Colombia, and Venezuela.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
There are 3 subspecies[1]:
- F. c. conspicillatus:
- F. c. metae:
- East slope of East Andes of Colombia to extreme western Venezuela
- F. c. caucae:
- South West Colombia west of Andes (Cauca and Nariño); western Ecuador?
Habitat
They occupy a variety of woodland types, including lowland evergreen forest edges, gallery forests, semi-open deciduous woodland.
Behaviour
Diet
They forage on the ground for grass seeds. But from bushes they gather berries, fruits and buds; possibly also blossoms.
Breeding
They make a hole in a stump, tree trunk, fence post, or termitarium.
