South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana and Brazil.

Subspecies
There are 3 subspecies[1]:
- P. a. curiosus:
- Santa Marta Mountains (north-eastern Colombia)
- P. a. augusti:
- Colombia (Eastern Andes and Macarene Mountains) to mountains of northern Venezuela
- P. a. incanescens:
- Tepuis of south-eastern Venezuela and adjacent Guyana
P. fumosus is a colour morph which is sometimes considered a species Schluter's Hermit[2]
Subspecies vicarius is generally considered invalid[2].

Its nest hangs by a single thick rope of spiders' silk from some overhead support such as bridges or roofs.
