Synallaxis brachyura

Location: San Gerardo Biological Station, Costa Rica

Identification

15 cm. Dark grey-brown becoming dark grey on the head. The crown and shoulder patches are rich rufous. It has a long, pointed wispy tail. Sexes are similar, but young birds are duller and browner with a yellowish chin.

Distribution

Northern Honduras to western Ecuador and east-central Brazil.

Taxonomy

Habitat

Lowlands and up to 1500 m altitude in a range of scrubby habitats, including road and river edges, and overgrown pasture.

Behaviour

The diet includes beetles, caterpillars and other prey which are foraged in deep, tangled thickets.

It builds a bulky spherical stick nest, with a long tubular entrance, in a shrub or vine covered tree. 2-3 greenish white eggs are laid.
