Identification
19-20 cm
- Upperside mostly black, on mantle spotted with yellow
- White central back
- Crown and nape scarlet
- White supercilium
- Black bandit's mask including ear coverts at the rear
- White throat, lower side of head, and upper breast
- Scarlet in band across lower breast and continuing down along flanks
- Rest of underside yellowish to white
- Bill is bluish-to-steel grey with darker tip
- Eye is dark red
Similar Species
Very similar to Scarlet-banded Barbet but ranges probably not overlapping.
Distribution
South America: southern Cerros del Sira, Ucayali, Peru.
Fairly common in its small range.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
It was previously considered a part of Scarlet-banded Barbet .
Habitat
Lower to mid elevation wet montane forest with mosses and epiphytes dominating the branches.
Behaviour
Feeds on berries and similar vegetarian items supplemented with insects. The food is found while the bird moves slowly along the branches, solitary to small flocks of about four birds.
Vocalisation
Song described as a low pitch thrill.
