Identification

22-25 cm

  • Rounded body
  • Sandy-brown plumage
  • Wavy white and brown flank stripes
  • Grey head
  • Black stripe through the eye
  • White cheek patch
  • White spleckling on neck sides

Female is much duller

Sand Partridge

Distribution

Arid south-east Turkey, Syria, Iraq, Iran and Pakistan.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Dry, open and hilly country.

Behaviour

Diet

The diet includes seeds and insects.

Breeding

It nests in a ground scrape and 8-16 eggs are laid.
