Identification

68cm

  • Iridescent purplish-green upperparts
  • Short, curly metallic green crown feathers
  • Copper neck
  • Purplish-black throat
  • White back
  • Blue orbital skin
  • Yellowish-orange bill
  • Brown iris
  • White tail, with a broad chestnut band

Female: lacks crest

  • Mostly dark brown plumage
  • White throat
  • Pale yellow bill

Distribution

Asia: found in south-western China, Tibet, north-east India, Eastern Himalayas
South-east Asia: Indochina and northern Myanmar

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 3 subspecies[1]:

  • L. s. arunachalensis:
  • Mountains of western Arunachal Pradesh (northern India)
  • L. s. sclateri:
  • Southeastern Tibet south to northeastern India (northeastern Arunachal Pradesh) and east to southern China (northern Yunnan) and northern Myanmar
  • L. s. orientalis:
  • Northeastern Myanmar and adjacent southern China (southwestern Yunnan)

The subspecies orientalis, is not recognised by all authorities[2]

Habitat

Mountain forests.

Behaviour

Diet

The diet includes seeds and flowers.

Breeding

The clutch consists of 3-5 eggs.
