Identification

41-44cm. Similar to Livingstone's Turaco.

  • Long, attenuated, white tipped crest
  • More greenish mantle and wings
  • Paler green underparts
  • Deep bluish black to violet tail
  • White line under eye shown by most individuals, greatly reduced or absent on northern Tanzanian birds.

Sexes similar.

Distribution

Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Malawi, Namibia, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Common in parts of its range.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species.
The Knysna Turaco, Livingstone's Turaco and Schalow's Turaco (the green Turacos of southern Africa) were previously regarded as conspecific. However, their treatment as separate species is supported by morphological, vocal and molecular evidence.

Habitat

Found in gallery or evergreen forest, riparian woodland and thickets.
Occurs from 600m up to 2500m.

Behaviour

Diet

Feeds mainly on fruit.

Breeding

Breeding season differs through range. The nest is a flimsy structure made of sticks. It's placed 3 to 10m above the ground in the thickest part of a bush or a tree. Lays 2 eggs.

Movements

A sedentary species.
