Identification
27-28cm (10½-11 in). A fairly large laughingthrush.
- Dull rufous-brown underparts, neck and mantle
- Grey dark streaked crown and ear-coverts
- Blackish throat
- Blackish bill and feet
- Crimson fringing on wings and uppertail
Distribution
South-west China (Sichuan, Yunnan and Guangxi provinces) and north-west Vietnam.
Restricted-range species but fairly common in parts of its range.
Taxonomy
Also placed in the genus Garrulax.
Subspecies
Two subspecies recognized[1]:
- T. f. formosum in Sichuan, northeast Yunnan and northern Guangxi
- T. f. greenwayi in southeast Yunnan and northern Vietnam
Habitat
Broadleaf evergreen forest, secondary growth and scrub near forest and bamboo. Found at 900, to 3150m, in Vietnam above 2400m.
Behaviour
Diet
Feeds probably on invertebrates and some vegetable matter.
Forages close or on the ground in piars or small groups. Shy and skulking.
Breeding
Breeding season from June to July. No other information.
Movements
Resident species with some irregular, possibly rain-related movements.
