Identification

30–32 cm (12-12½ in)

  • Crimson neck and head with a pointed crest
  • Rufous-chestnut underparts
  • Ivory bill
  • Yellow eye

Male

  • Small black and white spot on the lower ear coverts

Female

  • Broad white wedge from the bill to below the eyes bordered with a thin black line.

South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, Suriname, French Guiana, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Brazil

Habitat

Rain and cloudforests, terra firme and várzea forests and forest edges.

Behaviour

Diet

The diet includes large beetle and moth larvae. They forage in pairs and family groups feeding in the middle and upper levels of the tree trunks.
