Identification
27-32 cm. Brown upperparts, grey chest, buff belly, barred back and wings, rosy-red legs.
Distribution
French Guiana, Guyana and Suriname, Colombia, Venezuela and north-east Brazil
Taxonomy
There are seven subspecies:[1]
- C. e. columbianus - Tropical north-central Colombia
- C. e. saltuarius - Sierra de Ocaña, northeastern Colombia
- C. e. idoneus - Northeastern Colombia and adjacent northwestern Venezuela
- C. e. cursitans - Northern Colombia east of the Andes and northwestern Venezuela
- C. e. spencei - Northern Venezuela
- C. e. margaritae - Margarita Island
- C. e. erythropus - Eastern Venezuela to Guyana, Suriname, and northeastern Brazil
Some of these subspecies have been viewed as full species in the past, and it is uncertain that this treatment is the final word; see SACC[2] for a discussion.
Habitat
Dry forest and shrubland.
Behaviour
Its diet includes seeds, berries, snails and insects. Its eggs are grey-lavender, suffused with pink.
