Identification
19 cm – 7 ½ inches
Male
- Noticeable beak, arched on top
- Upper body, wings, and tail are dark
- Purple on the throat
Female
- Dark, but a dark shade of brown
- Feathers on tail more prominent than the male with some pointing
Juvenile
- Resembles a lighter version of the female
Distribution
Tropical southeastern Colombia to southeastern Peru and western Amazonian Brazil
Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru
Taxonomy
It is a monotypic species.
Habitat
Subtropical or tropical swamps and heavily degraded former forest.
