Identification

11–12·5 cm (4¼-5 in)
Both sexes have a black, down-curved bill and green to golden-green upperparts.
Adult male

• Black band across upper breast
• Green flanks
• Rest of underside varies from paler grey to blackish-brown
• Green iridescent throat
• The tail is maroon-purple with darker tips
  

Young male has a dark stripe centrally on the otherwise grey underside
Female

• Pale underside that gradually blends in to the green upperside on the side of the head and flanks
• Central tail feathers green, the rest are dull grey-brown gradually becoming a darker subterminal band and narrow white tips.

Puerto Rico, Culebra Island, Vieques Island and Virgin Islands, even though it has been extirpated from most of the Virgin Islands and is increasingly rare on the rest.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species^[1].

This species and Hispaniolan Mango were formerly lumped under the name of Antillean Mango.

Habitat

Dry to medium wet forest but avoiding the true rainforest. Also found in gardens and more semi-open areas.

Behaviour

Feeds on both nectar and insects.

Vocalisation

Most frequent is a repeated "tsick" sound, high pitched and sharp.
