Identification
19–20 cm (7½-7¾ in)
Male
- Dark claret-purple
- Darker head.
- White wings with purple scapulars
- Pale yellow iris
Female: grey with white edges to the wing feathers
Distribution
South America: found from eastern Colombia to southern Venezuela, Guianas, north-eastern Bolivia and Amazonian Brazil
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Habitat
Canopy of a variety of forest types and areas of sandy soil forest, along the Amazon. Up to heights around 1300 m.
Behaviour
Females sometimes join mixed canopy flocks but males appear to be more solitary.
Diet
Their diet consists mostly of fruit, such as palm fruits and figs, with the addition of some insects.
