Plain-flanked Rail - BirdForum Opus

Rallus wetmorei

Identification

24-27 cm. This bird is mainly brown, but its crown is olive-brown. It has a fawn supercilium and its lores are dark grey. Its face, upper parts and tail are brown with black-brown streaks. Its chin is white, its throat is buff, and its underbelly is pinky-buff with greyer, unbarred flanks. Its bill is olive, straight and slender. Its legs are olive brown in colour.

Distribution

The north coast of Venezuela. Endangered (only known to occur in 5 sites).

Taxonomy

  • A monotypic species.
  • Formerly lumped within Mangrove Rail, R. longirostris.

Habitat

Coastal mangroves, and shallow saltwater.

Behaviour

Nests in mangrove (often black mangrove) within 1 m from water.
