6 to 7 inches

  • Golden-yellow head and breast
  • Grey back
  • Greyish-white belly

Female and immature birds are duller
The finch-like bill is dark on adults and orange on fledglings.

Habitat

Mamane-naio dry forest and the native understory such as pukiawe, grasslands, and lava fields.

Diet includes green mamane seed pods, insects, berries, buds, and young leaves.

It lays 2 eggs.
