- Cinclodes olrogi
Identification
17 cm. A small and fairly dark cinclodes with a medium-length, slightly decurved bill.
- White supercilium
- Blackish-brown crown, lores and auriculars
- Dark grey-brown upperparts with faint chestnut tinge
- Darker wings with a striking white band across base of remiges
- Dark grey-brown tail, darker at sides with dull rufous tips of outer rectrices
- White throat and breast, some dark scaling on breast
- Pale dull brown rest of underparts
Sexes similar, juveniles undescribed.
Distribution
Andes of north-central Argentina (western Córdoba and northeast San Luis).
Common in its small range.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Has been considered conspecific with Gray-flanked Cinclodes or with Buff-winged Cinclodes.
Habitat
High altitude shrubland and rocky areas, often near streams and lakes.
Occurs at 1600-2800 m.
Behaviour
Diet
Feeds on arthropods and probably also other invertebrates.
Gleans prey from ground, rocks and mud, usually solitary or in pairs.
Breeding
Breeds during austral spring, eggs and nestling recorded in November and December. Presumably a monogamous species. The nest is placed in a tunnel excavated in a bank or in a rock crevice or another hole. Lays 2 eggs.
Movements
A resident species. Some post-breeding movements to lower altitudes recorded (down to 900 m).
