Identification
10-12 cm.(4-4¾ in) A small tapaculo.
- Grey head and mantle with brown wash on nape
- Short, indistinct, pale grey supercilium
- Brown lower back and uppertail-coverts barred black
- Grey wings with dark brown inner remiges with blackish subterminal bars
- Dusky grey tail, often barred buff-brown and blackish
- Grey underparts, pale tawny-brown flanks barred blackish
Sexes similar, females have more brown upperparts, less grey and wings and tail are browner and more strongly barred.
Juveniles undescribed, but essentially barred brown and black.
Distribution
Central Andes of Peru (southern Amazonas to Huánuco).
Uncommon, however common locally in Río Abiseo National Park.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Formerly considered a subspecies of Magellanic Tapaculo.
Habitat
Found in humid montane forest, usually at 3250 to 3450 m, locally lower.
Behaviour
A poorly known species. No information about diet or breeding.
Probably a sedentary species.
