Identification
11cm. A tiny bird with bright green upperparts, red throat, whitish underparts. Lower mandible reddish, usuallly with a black tip. Some (but not all) photos show a blue eye ring
Similar species
Broad-billed Tody is best separated by voice.
Distribution
Hispaniola: Dominican Republic and Haiti but only on the major island, not on any of the larger outlying islands
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Habitat
Mature broadleaved forest, and in some pine forest -- prefers ravines. In specific areas in lowlands, but in most of Hispaniola it is found above 700 m asl. Particularly likes areas with dense, mossy understory.
Behaviour
Voice is typically a two (or three) syllable short song: Chick-tweee or Chick-twee-wee. Occasionally, one may hear a Chick-chick doublet instead.
Diet is mainly insects, but occasionally eats tiny lizards taken in flight.
To nest it excavates a tunnel in a soil bank to 30cm with a nest chamber at the end. Eggs are white.
