Identification
White outer tail feathers, curved bill, males are black below, females and immatures are speckled, with white bellies.
Distribution
Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Venezuela.
Taxonomy
Subspecies
Seven subspecies are recognized[1].
- L. l. liriope - Santa Marta Mountains (northeast Colombia)
- L. l. longirostris - northern portion of the Central Andes of Colombia
- L. l. greenewalti - Andes of western Venezuela (northeast Táchira, Mérida and southern Trujillo)
- L. l. lafresnayi - Sierra de Perijá, extreme southwestern Andes of Venezuela (Páramo de Tamá, in southern Táchira) and the Eastern Andes of Colombia
- L. l. saul - Western Andes of Colombia, and both slopes of Andes of Ecuador and of northern Peru (north and west of the Marañón Valley)
- L. l. orestes - east slope of Andes of northern Peru (Amazonas, south of the Marañón Valley)
- L. l. rectirostris - east slope of Andes of northern and central Peru (La Libertad to Cuzc
