Identification
- Head, neck and underparts greyish-pink with brightest on hindneck
- Throat white
- Mantle and wings mostly reddish purple to chestnut, flight feathers blackish brown
- Tail blackish brown with wide pale grey terminal band; underside pale
- Eye pale to whitish
Distribution
Bhutan, Brunei, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Taxonomy
Malabar Imperial Pigeon was formerly included in this species.
Subspecies
Three subspecies are recognized[1].
- D.b.insignis Himalayan foothills (western Nepal to northeast India (Sikkim) and Bhutan)
- D.b.griseicapilla Myanmar to southwest China, Hainan, Thailand and Indochina
- D.b.badia Malay Peninsula and Mergui Arch. to Sumatra, Borneo and western Java
Habitat
Forest above 400 m asl in the west to mangrove forest in the east. Highest elevations are 2200-2500 m asl.
