Overview

This is the largest area of raised bog in this part of Scotland. A large reserve with diverse habitat, including deciduous woodland, salt marsh and pastures, mudflats, tidal rivers, lagoons.

Birds

Notable Species

Hen Harrier hunt the moorland and occasionally nest. Eurasian Curlew feed and breed on the moor. In the winter Greenland White-fronted Goose, Whooper Swan and Eurasian Wigeon may be seen in the estuary or the salt marsh and surrounding fields. Osprey are a regular sight fishing the river.

The Crinan Canal runs along the southern edge of the moor.

History and Use

The moorland was badly degraded due to centuries of draining and peat cutting, but now appears to be regenerating.
