Identification
Similar species
Sierra de Lema Flycatcher differs in size of leks and song as well as in being found at higher elevation.
Distribution
South America in the Amazonian lowlands.
Taxonomy
Sierra de Lema Flycatcher was formerly considered a part of this species.
McConnell's Flycatcher have in the past been placed in genus Pipromorpha.
Subspecies
Three subspecies are recognized[1].
- M. m. macconnelli
- eastern Venezuela east to the Guianas and northeastern Brazil, north of the Amazon; it is not clear whether populations of central eastern Brazil south of the Amazon refer to amazonas (as these historically have been identified), or to the geographically adjacent nominate macconnelli
- M. m. peruanus
- central and southeastern Peru, adjacent southwestern Brazil
- M. m. amazonus
- Bolivia; it is not clear whether populations of central eastern Brazil south of the Amazon refer to amazonas (as these historically have been identified), or to the geographically adjacent nominate macconnelli of the Guianan region
Habitat
Mostly lowland forest.
Behaviour
Displaying males assemble in leks.
