Telophorus multicolor[1]

Identification

Length 18-19 cm. This species has several colour morphs, but generally they have a black eye stripe, and the hind crown and nape are grey merging to olive on the back and wings.

  • Orange-breasted morph has a white eyebrow, orange throat and breast and yellow belly.
  • Scarlet-breasted morph has a white eyebrow, red throat and breast and yellow or red-and-yellow belly.
  • Buff-breasted morph has a white eyebrow and buff throat, breast and belly.
  • Black-breasted morph lacks the white eyebrow, the throat and breast are black, and the belly yellow.

Similar species

Black-fronted Bushshrike is similar, but never has a white eyebrow and ranges do not overlap.

Distribution

Africa
Western Africa: found in Guinea, Mali, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Togo, Nigeria, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Democratic Republic of Congo, Angola and Zaire
Eastern Africa: occurs only in Uganda and Rwanda.

Taxonomy

Subspecies

Chlorophoneus multicolor has three subspecies:[1]

  • C. m. multicolor
  • C. m. batesi
  • C. m. graueri

Habitat

Canopy and mid-stratum of forests at altitudes of up to 2500 m.

Behaviour

Diet

Diet includes insects; often forages in multispecies flocks.

Vocalisation

Call is diagnostic: choop-sshweet.

Breeding

Up to four eggs are laid in a cup nest in a tree.
