Identification

Distribution

South-central South America in Argentina, Bolivia, Uruguay and Paraguay.

Taxonomy

Monotypic.
Proposals have been made to transfer this species to the genus Saltator but e.g., SACC deemed the data not strong enough at this point.

The family placement is controversial and this species is either placed in Emberizidae, Thraupidae or Cardinalidae.

Habitat

Found in or near dry (Chaco) woodland.
