Long-tailed Myna - BirdForum Opus

Identification

30cm. A large myna.

  • Large yellow-orange patch of bare skin around eye
  • Black plumage with some gloss
  • White rump and uppertail-coverts
  • Black wing with white patch
  • Black tail
  • Lower belly deep golden-yellow, white undertail-coverts
  • Orange-yellow bill and legs

Sexes similar.

Similar species

Similar to Yellow-faced Myna from mainland New Guinea but larger and no yellow bare skin on chin.

Distribution

Found on the Bismarck Archipelago (Papua New Guinea) and the northern and central Solomon Islands.
Common to abundant in parts of its range.

Taxonomy

Currently treated as monotypic.
Sometimes considered conspecific with Yellow-faced Myna and treatement as separate species may not be justified.

Habitat

Forest, forest edge, plantations, secondary growth, village gardens. Generally found below 500m.

Behaviour

Feeds on fruit.
Usually seen singly or in pairs, mostly in the canopy.
Breeding all year. A monogamous species, partners stay together throughout year. The nest is placed in a tree hole or in a broken palm. Lays 2 eggs.
A resident species.
