Identification
13 cm (5 in). A small finch with a longish tail and with a slim, pointed bill.
- Grey head and nape
- Blackish lores and around base of bill, narrow connection to black chin
- Brownish upperparts, obscurely streaked
- Brownish-grey lower back and uppertail-coverts
- Black tail with white outer edges
- Grey upperwing with browner-edged tertials and browner edges on inner greater coverts
- Grey throat, breast and flanks, lower flanks with browner wash
- Off-white belly and vent
- Bright yellow bill
Females are similar but have a browner crown and a bill with a dusky culmen.
Distribution
Endemic to the lower portion of Marañón Valley in northwest Peru.
Fairly common in its small range.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Habitat
Lowland desert shrubland with ground bromeliads.
Occurs from 390 to 900 m.

Forages on the ground, singly or in pairs.
