Identification
18–19 cm (7-7½ in)
Adult: Tawny-orange head, throat and breast with a black mask.
Wings black with broad white stripe. Belly white.
Bill and legs black.
Juvenile: Olive upperparts with rufous rump and indistinct buff wing-bar; pale olive-yellow below.
Distribution
Africa between 7°N and 9°S. Extreme south-eastern Nigeria to north-western Angola and Uganda5. Also occurs in montane forests in western Rwanda.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
The endangered Braun's Bushshrike and Gabela Bushshrike are sometimes regarded as subspecies of this taxon.
Habitat
Forest and secondary growth; often near streams or wetlands.
Behaviour
Diet
Their main diet consists of caterpillars (particularly those gleaned from parasol-type trees), beetles, grasshoppers, mantises and moths
Vocalization
A resonant wuurk and a duet call shrik shrik.
