Glaucidium castanopterum

Identification

23-25 cm.
Upperside chestnut with white band on scapulars, Underside streaked white and chestnut with upper breast more brown. Head and neck barred brown and ochre, and tail with similar barring. Eyes yellow, bill yellow at tip, more green and olive towards the base. Legs feathered.

Distribution

Java and Bali in Indonesia

Taxonomy

Javan Owlet has been split from Asian Barred Owlet.

Javan Owlet is a monotypic species[1].

Some authorities place this species in genus Taenioglaux.

Habitat

Forest especially wet primary forest, mostly lowland but on Mt. Papandajan up to 2000 m asl.

Behaviour

Food mainly consists of large invertebrates.

Main activities around dusk and dawn or even into day from there.
