Identification

20 cm
Male

  • Blackish upperparts
  • Silvery-azure streak on central back from mantle to rump
  • White neck-flash with rufous tip
  • White throat
  • White or pale buff underparts
  • Blue band across chest
  • Black bill

Female

  • Rufous underparts
  • Blue breast-band narrower than in male
  • Orange lower mandible

Similar Species

Similar to Malayan Blue-banded Kingfisher (which see), Common Kingfisher and Blue-eared Kingfisher

Distribution

South-east Asia: found only in Java where critically endangered.

Taxonomy

May be considered conspecific with Malayan Blue-banded Kingfisher (e.g. reference [7]).

Subspecies

This is a monotypic species [1].

Habitat

Rocky streams and rivers in primary and secondary equatorial rainforests.

Behaviour

The diet includes small fish, crustaceans, insects and small reptiles.
