- Red overall plumage
- Black wings and tail
- Long curved salmon-coloured bill
Distribution
Found only on the main Hawaiian Islands. Still numerous at higher elevations on Hawai'i and Maui.
Small remnant populations on Kaua'i and O'ahu may vanish in the near future.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species[1].
Formerly placed in its own monotypic genus Vestiaria.
Habitat
Dry and wet ohia and mamame forests.
Behaviour
Diet
Diet consists mostly of nectar from ōhia trees. They supplement this with invertebrates.
Breeding
They form monogomous pairs during the breeding season, which runs from December to July.
