Identification

Golden-yellow underside, dark bluish-grey upperside, black head with red eye, dark bill and legs.
Distribution
South America: found in Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia

There are 5 subspecies[1]:
- B. m. gigas:
- B. m.cucullata:
- B. m. cyanonota:
- Andes of Peru (Amazonas to Junín)
- B. m. saturata:
- Andes of south-eastern Peru (Cuzco and Puno)
- B. m. montana:
- Andes of western Bolivia (La Paz and Cochabamba)
A 6th subspecies B. m venezuelana is recognised by some authorities[2]
Habitat
Montane Cloudforest, edges, ravines with scrub, etc.
Behaviour
Diet
In pairs or flocks, both single and mixed species. Feeds on a variety of foods: insects, seeds, berries, and fruit, found often in or near canopy, but also elsewhere.
Vocalisation
Known to be a vocal species.
