Guadalcanal Dwarf Kingfisher - BirdForum Opus

Ceyx nigromaxilla


A very tiny kingfisher measuring only 11-13 cm (4¼-5 in).

  • Purple-blue upperparts (without contrasting central stripe)
  • Rufous-orange underparts

Sexes are alike.


Indonesia: known from Guadalcanal and Malaita (Solomon Islands).


Formerly included in Variable Dwarf Kingfisher. Later was lumped with Malaita Dwarf Kingfisher.


Two subspecies are recognized[1].

  • C. n. malaitae:
  • Known from the type specimen from Malaita (Solomon Islands)
  • C. n. nigromaxilla:
  • Guadalcanal (Solomon Islands)


Forests, both primary and older secondary forests.



Very limited information but food includes insects.


Flight call: a high-pitched down-slurred note given singly or up to three in a series.
