Identification
A very tiny kingfisher measuring only 11-13 cm (4¼-5 in).
- Purple-blue upperparts (without contrasting central stripe)
- Rufous-orange underparts
Sexes are alike.
Distribution
Indonesia: known from Guadalcanal and Malaita (Solomon Islands).
Taxonomy
Formerly included in Variable Dwarf Kingfisher. Later was lumped with Malaita Dwarf Kingfisher.
Subspecies
Two subspecies are recognized[1].
- C. n. malaitae:
- Known from the type specimen from Malaita (Solomon Islands)
- C. n. nigromaxilla:
- Guadalcanal (Solomon Islands)
Habitat
Forests, both primary and older secondary forests.
Behaviour
Diet
Very limited information but food includes insects.
Vocalisation
Flight call: a high-pitched down-slurred note given singly or up to three in a series.
