Identification
31 cm (12 in)
- Olive-brown upperparts, crown paler with dark streaking
- Grey nuchal collar
- Unstreaked darker olive-brown mantle
- Darker grey-brown side of face, greyish bare skin around eye
- Dark olive upperwing, remiges edged greenish-yellow
- Dark olive-brown tail, paler and greyer on underside, with paler tips on inner webs
- Grey-green chin and throat with darker streaks
- Warm golden-olive chest, mottled darker and merging into paler buffy belly and undertail-coverts
Sexes similar, juveniles undescribed.
Similar species
Looks very similar to Seram Friarbird and can be very difficult to distinguish in the field.
Distribution
Endemict to Seram in the southern Moluccan Islands, Indonesia.
A moderately common restricted-range species.
Taxonomy
This is a monotypic species.
Forms a superspecies with Olive-backed Oriole, Timor Oriole, Wetar Oriole, Black-eared Oriole, Dusky-brown Oriole and Brown Oriole.
Habitat
Lowland and montane primary forest.
Occurs up to 1100m, less common in the mountains.
Behaviour
Diet
Not well known. Diet includes insects and some fruits.
Forages singly or in pairs in the canopy down to middle storey of the forest. Also in mixed-species flocks.
Breeding
No information.
Movements
A sedentary species.
