  • Coppery-green upperparts, head and neck
  • White thighs

Distribution

Central America and South America
Central America: Panama
South America: Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia

There are 6 subspecies[1]:

  • H. a. floccus
  • extreme eastern Panama and adjacent northwestern Colombia (Cerro Malí, Cerro Tacarcuna)
  • H. a. galindoi
'extreme eastern Panama (Cerro Pirre)
  • H. a. caucensis:
  • H. a. aureliae:
  • Eastern Andes of Colombia and (?) east slope of central Andes
  • H. a. russata:
  • H. a. cutucuensis:
  • Mountains of eastern Ecuador (Cordillera de Cutucú)

Habitat

Wet and humid montane and pre-montane subtropical forests and forest edges.

Behaviour

Diet

Their main diet consists of nectar taken from a wide range of tubular (particularly red) flowers, trees and shrubs. They defend their territory very aggressively.

Breeding

Their cup-shaped nest is constructed from dead leaves; it is lined with hair, moss and stems of maple leaves.
