Euphonia chalybea

Identification

11 cm (4¼ in); a large euphonia with a thick bill
Male

  • Yellow frontal band
  • Blackish lores

Female: olive above and grey below with yellow-olive on the chin and flanks

Similar Species

Violaceous Euphonia, which has a larger yellow patch on the forecrown and a smaller bill.

Distribution

Found in from east Paraguay to south-east Brazil and north-east Argentina.

Taxonomy

This is a monotypic species[1].

Habitat

Atlantic rain forest, in woodland and at forest edges and in backyards.

Behaviour

Diet

Their diet consists of fruit and insects, including caterpillars and spiders.
