Distribution

South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 6 subspecies[1]:

  • P. r. occidentalis:
  • P. r. riefferii:
  • P. r. melanolaema:
  • Andes of western Venezuela (north to southern Lara)
  • P. r. confusa:
  • Andes of eastern Ecuador to Andes of Peru (northern Amazonas)
  • P. r. chachapoyas:
  • Subtropical Central Andes of northern Peru (San Martín)

Subspecies confusa is not recognised by all authorities and has been absorbed into P.r. chachapoyas[5]

Cloud forest with ornamental plantings, forest edges. Observed at heights around 1650-2350 m,

Their main diet consists of fruit.
