Identification

8–10 cm

Similar Species

Very similar to Stripe-throated Hermit.

Distribution

South America: found in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil

Taxonomy

Subspecies

There are 3 subspecies[1]:

  • P. g. porcullae:
  • Lower slopes of west side of Andes of southwestern Ecuador (Loja) and northwestern Peru (Tumbes, Piura, and Lambayeque)
  • P. g. griseogularis:
  • P. g. zonura:
  • Northern Peru (Marañón Valley in eastern Cajamarca and adjacent Amazonas)

Habitat

Lower slopes of cloud forest and forest edges.

Behaviour

Diet

Their main diet consists of nectar and insects; feeding by the trap-lining method.
